Graduate training scheme
British Sugar plc East of England, East Midlands There's more to British Sugar than meets the eye. Yes, we process more than 7 million tonnes of sugar beet - that's the UK's entire crop - every year. We receive 2,500 lorry loads of sugar beet each day. Our work ranges from talking to some 5,000 beet suppliers to major R&D investment taking in new product development and increasing crop yield. The factories themselves rival those you'd find in the oil, petrochemical and power industries. But it doesn't stop there.
The first part of the sugar production means removing stones and soil from the beet crop. The nutrient-rich topsoil is sold back to companies involved in landscaping, civil engineering projects, restoration or even sports ground reconstruction.
Once the sugar is removed from the beet, the remaining vegetable matter is dried to produce animal feed products, giving us a third business.
Then there's our a 23-acre greenhouse which takes the C02 co-product and water used in the sugar process and utilises both to grow the UK's biggest crop of round salad tomatoes.
Lastly, we drew on our sugar beet experience - and our sugar beet suppliers - to become the first UK company to manufacture bioethanol, a carbon-friendly, fully renewable fuel. The combined heat & power system we use is one of the most fuel-efficient processes available - around 80% of the energy in the fuel is employed in the sugar manufacturing process. We've saved around 60% in CO2 emissions when compared to petrol. Closing Date: 31/01/2009

Graduate Opportunities in Accountancy
National Audit Office London (inner or outer), North East England The National Audit Office occupies a unique position in public life. And working for the National Audit Office can be a unique experience too.
Our graduates are given lots of early responsibility and exposed to a huge range of interesting work. All while getting the support they need to gain Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales (ICAEW) qualifications.
So what exactly is the National Audit Office?
We’re an independent body responsible for scrutinising public spending. We audit the accounts of all central government departments and agencies, as well as a range of other public bodies. We also produce value-for-money studies, which examine how well public money has been spent.
It’s vitally important work. We save the country millions of pounds a year across a wide range of areas. Unsurprisingly, our reports often make headline news.
For you, this means the opportunity to work in a complex and high-profile environment, investigating everything from the effectiveness of UK flood defences to the way in which health services are run.
And where else would you get the chance to do that?
But it’s not just the kind of work we offer that makes us so popular with graduates. It’s also the kind of organisation we are. Ours is a friendly, supportive culture that tends to inspire loyalty and mutual respect. We’re serious about work-life balance too. Our scheme is certainly no walk in the park, but nor is it an endless succession of all-nighters and early starts. Perish the thought.
Then of course there are all the great benefits you get. Salary-wise we’re right up there with the top private sector employers, and as you make your way through your training that salary will go up. You’ll also be enrolled in the civil service pension scheme from the very first day you join.
For many people, however, there’s a bigger reward still. And that’s knowing that the work you do is not only saving the nation millions of pounds, but also ensuring that public services are as effective and efficient as they can possibly be. Closing Date: non stated
