Graduate training scheme
British Sugar plc East of England, East Midlands As the UK’s leading supplier of sugar, we built our first sugar factory at Cantley in Norfolk back in 1912. And that factory is still producing sugar to this day.
Since then, we’ve seen and introduced our fair share of innovations, from being one of the original manufacturers to add bar codes to packaging, to being the first UK food manufacturer to gain accreditation in quality management system BS5750, the forerunner of ISO9000.
We’ve also taken the hot water and CO2 that result from our sugar manufacturing process and used them to become the largest producer of salad tomatoes in the country. In addition we are the UK’s largest supplier of quality Topsoil products to the landscape and amenity industries and make animal feed as another co-product. We are the first manufacturer of bioethanol in the UK and, thanks to our state-of-the-art gas turbines, sell power we produce back to the National Grid.
It’s an eco-conscious operation – and it will teach you a great deal about manufacturing in a very short time.
You’d better feel ready for responsibility. There’s no shortage of it here. On the Operations scheme you could find yourself in charge of an entire shift, their performance and safety, and all within 18 months. On the HR, Agriculture, Finance or IT schemes, you’ll be making an enormously diverse, 365-day operation run even more efficiently. At the end of it, we expect you’ll be equipped for a senior role.
Operations
Our industry has been developing at a pace never seen before, and factories are right at the heart of it. No wonder then that this scheme is intensive; some would call it hardcore. Nothing less can prepare you for the challenge of running your own factory in a few short years.
Ours are big factories that work 24/7 to process the whole UK sugar beet crop. Besides learning how to manage one, you’ll be looking at ways to exploit new technologies, find new co-products and deliver process improvements. You’ll get to grips with the full production lifecycle, from factory start-up through supply chain and distribution to the commercial side of the business. And within 18 months, full responsibility for operating the factory and managing a shift team of up to 25 people will rest on your shoulders
For a role like this you will need a 2:1 Engineering degree in Chemical, Electrical, Mechanical or Process. Alternatively you might have a Chemistry degree or an Electrical Engineering degree where you’ll focus on the power side of the business, finding ways to improve our Combined Heat and Power stations, reduce energy usage and improve distribution on our high/low voltage networks.
Agriculture
The Agricultural Department is responsible for the supply of the country's entire sugar beet crop. If you have the drive and passion with excellent interpersonal skills, then we are interested in you. We are looking for self-motivated graduates in either an Agricultural or Biological Sciences related discipline. The comprehensive training programme involves a number of technical, personal and professional development aspects, including the BASIS and FACTS qualifications.
Our other schemes
Our other schemes include Business Management, IT and HR. Our challenging two-year Business scheme provides graduates with an exciting opportunity to experience the essential mix of British Sugar’s commercial operations. You will build a unique portfolio of skills by contributing to a diverse range of 'live' projects within our Sales & Marketing, Purchasing, Product, Customer Service and Supply Chain teams. Only those who are hungry to learn should apply. On the IT scheme you’ll learn how technology can drive business improvements and operational efficiencies. It’s all about mixing technical knowledge with business analysis to deliver solutions. That’s why you’ll need a background in an IT and business-related discipline, together with excellent interpersonal skills and bags of determination and enthusiasm.
Join us in HR and you’ll be focusing on our most valuable asset, our people. You’ll train in all areas of HR – including recruitment, performance management, learning and development and compensation and benefits – and build solid foundations for a future as a specialist or generalist. Plus, along the way, we’ll sponsor you through your CIPD qualification.
